SALTY SANDY HAPPY

Reevive Vintage Coronation Fair -  Saltburn-by-the-Sea, 6th May 2023

Introducing Salty Sandy Happy and its creative talent Zoee. Founded in March 2020 the business creates unique pieces of Jewellery from recycled & upcycled materials including precious metals.

Often inspired by a love of the North Sea and surrounding area Zoee says

‘’The North Sea is my largest inspiration, the Seaglass it spits out on our shores from industrial waste and the movement reflected in my pieces. I absolutely love the making process, taking an old piece of silver and turning it into a fresh, new and unique piece of jewellery. The products I create are often inspired or dictated by the metal or upcycled piece I’m working with’’

Old water tanks, broken jewellery, silver spoons, silver toast racks, Seaglass and beach finds all feature with Seaglass Rings and Pendants being very popular end products.

Zoee adds ‘’My business hopefully shows how things can be reused and how easy it is to source recycled products to prevent further mining and destruction of our earth’’

CHISEL MONKEY

Reevive Vintage Coronation Fair -  Saltburn-by-the-Sea, 6th May, 2023

Introducing Chisel Monkey and its creative owner Mike Dillon. The small woodwork business runs from Mikes workshop in Hebden Bridge, making products from surplus and discarded materials.

Mike says ‘’ I make a lot of traditional wood-turned products... Bowls, Pens, Vases, Figurines but my favourite output is 3-string Cigar Box Guitars. They are all electrified, easy to play and a lot of fun. It’s a recycling/upcycling affair using old boxes, strips of Oak, bits and pieces from my workshop plus a few bits of hardware from the Music Shop to produce unique pieces which I think make a decent sound’’

‘’ These instruments were originally made by the poor in the southern states of the US. They have narrow necks and only three strings so they are easy to play, even for little hands. At craft fairs and festivals, we always have a possibility to sit down, plug in, and have a go’’

Mike adds ‘’Getting surplus and discarded materials back into homes as items to be re-used is rewarding in itself.

‘’I’d be delighted to see you at Reevive in Saltburn. Six strings are too many.....Pop in, Sit down, Tune up & Chill out’’

Check out Mikes little video below then get yourself down to The ReeVive Fair at Saltburn Community & Arts Centre on 6th May, 2023... maybe you’re the next Seasick Steve?

BOHO UNIQUE

Reevive Vintage, Retro, Upcycled & Craft  Fair -  Saltburn-by-the-Sea, 6th May 2023

Introducing Boho Unique and the creative talent of its owner Tracy. Founded during lockdown in 2020 Tracy began working with old, tired and broken necklaces, earrings and handbags etc to create her new, modern masterpieces.

Tracy says

‘’ Instead of throwing away broken pieces that were not suitable for charity and that would end up clogging landfill sites with more metals and plastics I decided to design, upcycle and revamp, creating new modern pieces, I’d create maybe three pairs of unique earrings from a broken necklace or a necklace from the parts of a handbag strap’’

‘’I found this very therapeutic so regularly search out old items in charity shops that I can give new life to’’

‘’I love the Art Deco & Boho movements so many of my pieces reflect these styles, these unique pieces are very popular with my customers, many of whom are repeat buyers’’

Tracy adds

‘’I only use Hypoallergenic stainless-steel Jewellery findings, they are more affordable than Gold or Silver and this helps to keep my prices as low as possible’’

LOVED....BY LAURA

Reevive Vintage, Retro, Upcycled & Craft  Fair -  Saltburn-by-the-Sea, 6th May 2023

Introducing Loved...by Laura

A creative and hands on job has been my dream for a lifetime. My business, now called Loved… by Laura, was officially formed in September 2022 after leaving my former career as a letting agent and realising another dream: moving back to the North-East after 20 years in Leeds.

Giving old furniture a new lease of life began with an upholstery course, countless home renovations and pieces for my own home. My favourite products are mid-century classics, often with a modern twist. I particularly adore restoring and upholstering the legendary Parker Knoll fireside chairs - they are just so timeless, beautiful and comfortable!

I love to find a bargain or, even better, a freebie - someone else’s unloved furniture or dare I say junk! - and let my imagination run wild with stunning paints and textiles. I always feel so accomplished and so proud of the end product.

I’m passionate about where I live and ensuring it’s just as beautiful for my children and grandchildren in years to come. Sustainability and the local community are so important.

By recycling and reusing furniture and fabrics to give one-off pieces a new lease of life for many years to come, I am proud to be taking us back to a more sustainable way of life.

I am inspired by the quality and beauty of all things Vintage and Retro and I feel they deserve to be loved… by Laura, and by you. I can’t wait to showcase my Loved…by Laura pieces.

I am very open to working on bespoke commissions to your requirements as well as considering collaborations.

Get yourself down to the ReeVive Fair at the Saltburn Community & Arts Centre on Saturday, 6th May 2023 and see Lauras Renovated & Upcycled Furniture...you’re sure to Love them

All their beautiful items are handcrafted and made using upcycled or recycled materials including genuine vintage yarns, fabrics, threads & embellishments all from pre 1980.

Dawn says ‘’This as a positive impact on the environment by using existing materials rather than adding to the demand for new. Repair, upcycle & re-use materials to create something new’’

Heather adds ‘’No plastics are used in any of my creations and every item will last more than one person's lifetime and are good items to pass on to future generations as heirloom pieces’’

Their most popular products are Beaded Bracelets, WW2 Sweaters, Whitby & Staithes Gansey patterned Cushion Covers.

The duo both love the creative process and creating things to wear & use that are visibly appreciated by their owners.

HOOK MY LIFE

Reevive Vintage, Retro, Upcycled & Craft  Fair -  Saltburn-by-the-Sea, 6th May 2023

Introducing Hook My Life and its creative crafter Verity.

‘Hook My Life’ is the craft-driven, unruly brainchild of myself, Verity Norval; Vet Nurse,  Musician, Runner (sort of) and strung-out mother of two with an unaddressed yarn, bead  and fat quarter addiction.

I have always crocheted on and off having been taught by my Grandma, but my tiny business grew out of necessity over lock down where I found crochet and wine were the two things that kept me from completely losing my mind. Having spent much of the pandemic under my own sofa cushions singing ‘Baby Shark’ with a 1-year-old, 3-year-old and a bottle of Pinot, I started making them characters from their favourite books to direct my focus away from the horror of the daily Covid updates. Then I made them clothes (because I was skint). Then I made Birthday/Christmas gifts (because I was skint). Then my friends started asking me to make them things (so I could be less skint) until eventually it was suggested that I sell my makes to the public. I was instantly horrified but, somehow, ‘Hook My Life’ emerged.

I make what I’d like to buy but can’t find. I also make what excites me, what I need and what brings me joy and hope someone else out there might enjoy it too. I’m inspired by vintage, bohemian, goth and alternative styles and I try to bring crochet up to date so it needn’t remain in the realms of doilies and dog blankets.

As well as yarn, I’ve also worked with tie-dye, resin, polymer clay, beads, paracord, jewellery and sewing. I’m still exploring what works but I’ve found one of my most popular items is the ‘Worry Monster’. As an adult with diagnosed generalised anxiety disorder, I wish these had existed when I was a child. They allow kids to write down their troubles onto paper and place them into the monster’s mouth so he/she can eat them away.

The environment is a very important consideration for ‘Hook My Life’ and I seek to limit my plastic use wherever I can. My packaging is paper-based and I am exploring making and using yarn made from old t-shirts for future projects. I also upcycle pre-loved clothing and re-use textiles from unwanted items such as buttons, zips and fabric.

‘Hook My Life’ is still evolving from it’s lockdown beginnings but I have so far loved the process and I can only hope vintage-lovers out there will continue to give my makes a home. There will be many more to come since nothing makes me happier than picking up a skein and hook!

With love!

Verity

VOCALIST SPOTLIGHT -

BECKY COOKE

Reevive Vintage, Retro, Upcycled & Craft Fair -  Saltburn-by-the-Sea, 6th May 2023

Becky Cooke is an up & coming Singer based in Lingdale, North Yorkshire.

From an early age Becky has had a deep passion for all things Music - her up bringing was always going to spark Musical interest with Becky being the daughter of 2 Singers so nobody was shy of belting out a tune in the Family household.

Becky is a versatile Artist who not only writes and performs original material but has also Coached other Musicians and worked on everything from Soul, Funk, Country and Pop to even more House and energetic Dance music with local Duo Neon Blue & Kinson.

Looking to the future, Becky dreams of taking to the Stage and connecting with more and more people not only close to Home in Teesside but all over the World like local Musician James Arthur.

We’ve had the great pleasure to spend time with Becky and her equally talented Family at Gigs and over a few beers so took the opportunity to ask her a few questions to get to know where all this passion comes from.

When did you start singing?

‘’I started singing at 4 years of age, at school I always sang in plays and musicals. I grew up with music always playing in my house as my mum and dad sang and played guitar, they performed professionally and were the most popular duo in the area for a long time. They performed as the duo ‘Young at Heart’. My Dad is still a professional musician.

‘’I was always keen to sing at open mic nights and got solo gigs until at 17 years old I was asked to front a band called ‘Cookie and the Buzz’. After that I gigged as a duo with Dean Heslop for a while’’

What do you like about Singing & Music?

‘’I love singing and writing my own songs, it comes naturally to me. Music is a big part of my life. I’m currently recording my first album of my own songs’’

Which Songs are your most requested?

‘’I sing a whole range of genres, but I would say Wuthering Heights by Kate Bush and House of the Rising Sun by the Animals’’

Who have been the major influences in your music career?

‘’I would say Michael Jackson and Beyonce’’

What’s next in your singing career?

‘’I released two songs in 2022 with ‘Neon Blue & Kinson’ called “Stay” and “Smile” which are available on spotify and other streaming channels.

‘’I am now in the process of recording an album which I am hoping will be available this summer. They are all my own songs and cover a wide range of genres Reggae, Pop, Ballads, Soul etc... In between that I am available for events and functions and I am always on the lookout for gigs to perform locally’’

‘’I’m really looking forward to singing at the Reevive Fair, where I will be singing a whole range of genres from 60s to current, as well as my own songs. I’ll be performing four 30 minute sets throughout the day’’

Where can people contact you if they are interested in hearing your songs and booking you for a gig?

‘’Anyone interested in hearing my music or booking me for a gig can find me on Spotify or Facebook’’
